Authoritarianism, inequality, polarization, disinformation, and the climate crisis are among the greatest barriers to advancing fairer and more inclusive societies.
Recognizing the urgency and threat of these forces, and the scale of alignment needed to meet these challenges, the Othering & Belonging Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, together with a set of European partners, has launched the Toward Belonging initiative to connect work globally to challenge the growing intolerance, lack of trust, and erosion of democratic norms that threaten our collective work to build belonging for all people and care for our living planet. Toward Belonging is working with organizations, scholars, artists, the public sector, philanthropy, and the wider civil society ecosystem to co-create a world where all belong.
WHAT WE DO
Facilitate cross-sector connections & ideas
Toward Belonging has a core commitment to facilitating new connections and relationship-building between those working in issues related to inclusion, social cohesion, bridging divides, and reducing polarization in the European region and beyond. We have hosted a series of meetings and online symposia and in 2021 we will launch our new “Coffeehouse Conversations” projects for small groups to engage in discussions related to challenges and opportunities within and beyond sectors, issue areas, and geographical borders.
Cultivate and advance practices for belonging in the European region
Our approach to change by design takes into account the outsized role that structures, institutions, leaders, and narratives play in creating or inhibiting belonging. We have commissioned papers and other content that examines belonging in the European region, and will regularly feature conversations with thought leaders and changemakers to explore these topics in our Belonging Forum.
Arts and cultural strategy for belonging in Europe
The role of arts and culture is integral to our efforts to advance belonging. We believe that artists and culturemakers can approach belonging with activities and perspectives that both complement and move beyond other modes of learning and engagement. One of our first endeavors in Toward Belonging was the hiring of a European-based inaugural Creative Fellow to explore and develop innovative ideas that use a creative approach to challenges to belonging in Europe.
